MGMT are a psychedelic pop duo founded by Benjamin Goldwasser and Andrew VanWyngarden in their freshman year at Wesleyan University, Connecticut. ‘We weren’t trying to start a band,’ remarked Goldwasser. ‘We were just hanging out and showing each other music that we liked.’ They experimented with various styles ranging from noise rock to electronica before landing on what Paco Alvarez of Spin calls ‘shape-shifting physcedelic pop.’ They graduated in 2005 and toured extensively in support of the Time to Pretend EP, opening for indie pop band Of Montreal.
In 2006, Maureen Kenny signed the band to Columbia Records. When they received the initial phone call from the A&R Department stating that they were interested in their music, they thought it was a hoax. MGMT (an abbreviation for Management) recorded their first album Oracular Spectacular in 2007 with Flaming Lips/Sleater-Kinney music producer Dave Fridmann which went on be named as the 18th best album of the decade by Rolling Stone Magazine, and best album of 2008 by NME.
Their Second album, Congratulations was released in 2010, and in 2011 they began work on their third album, MGMT. It was released on September 17, 2013.
