I ain't no hippie, just a New York boy
Neil Diamond was born in Brooklyn, New York January 24th 1941 to a Jewish family descended from Russian and Polish immigrants. In school he developed a skill for fencing and attended New York University on a fencing scholarship. However, during his senior year, a publishing company offered him $50 a week to write songs – the deal that started him on his road to stardom. Diamond has sold over 125 million records worldwide, making him one of the world’s best-selling artists of all time. He is third most successful adult contemporary artist on the billboard charts behind Elton John and one-time duet partner Barbra Streisand.
He has been inducted into the songwriters hall of fame, and into the rock and roll hall of fame.
