This land is my land,
From California to the New York Island,
From the Redwood Forest to the Gulf Stream waters,
This land was made for you and me
Peter, Paul and Mary were a United States folk-singing trio comprising of Peter Yarrow, (Noel) Paul Stookey and Mary Travers, whose nearly 50-year career began when manager Albert Grossman created the band in 1961 after auditioning several singers in the New York folk scene. They recorded their first self-titles debut album, Peter, Paul and Mary in 1962. The album was listed in the Billboard Magazine top ten for 10 months, including seven weeks in the #1 position. It remained a main catalog-seller for decades to come, eventually selling over two million copies, earning double platinum certification from the RIAA in the United States alone. After the death of Mary in 2009, Peter and Paul continued to perform as a duo under their individual names.
